This book is the first book that I have read by Cleverly, and I really enjoyed it. A Spider in the Cup was full of many twists and turns and just when the reader think they figured it out Cleverly added another twist. Sandilands was a great lead detective and was developed well throughout the course of the book. The reader gets to meet not just his colleagues but his family as well which helps give the reader a better look at who this detective is. Since this book is part of a series, I am sure that the reader gets more details about Sandilands and his non-work life during the series. However I enjoyed reading this book as a standalone and was able to follow it very well not being familiar with previous books. The book's mystery is well done and is able to keep the reader guessing. I also really enjoyed Cleverly's world building bringing to life 1933 London. Overall this book was a fabulous read that I would most definitely recommend if you are looking for a good mystery.
